DJ Brazen (aka Brockton native Geoff Maynard) is on tour with Freestylers and was having dinner a couple blocks away from the crash scene.
“We heard fire trucks and ambulances,” Brazen told the Dig from his Austin hotel room this morning. “We just thought it was standard shit.”
Brazen and Freestylers had played Cielo Wednesday night and were at Voodoo Lounge checking out a band showcase when the crash occurred. Brazen has played SXSW several times before and said this year’s festival seems far more crowded than previous years.
“It’s jammed,” he said. “It was a great festival up until this.”
Still, he wasn’t surprised by the violence. A couple years ago, he was at a club when someone fired off several rounds. And earlier this week, one of his go-go dancers and her friend were beaten up in an alley.
“Everyone is so wasted,” he said. “They let them all out at once at 2 a.m. You’ve got tourists, you’ve got everyone wasted, thugs. And it turns into a powder keg.”
